The SurfAid Foundation hosted the Billabong SurfAid Cup Malibu at Surfrider Beach on Sept. 11-12. The competition raised over $160,000 to help build stronger communities in Nias and Mentawai Islands off the coast of Eastern Indonesia.
The competition was run through two back-to-back heats with tag team surfing followed by a final round. The lineup featured several professional surfers, including Greg Long, Damien Hobgood, Matt McCabe, Mike McCabe and Anthony Petruso.
Along with the competition, SurfAid hosted a benefit night at Duke’s Malibu on Friday, Sept. 11 and a competition after party at Malibu Village on Saturday, Sept. 12.
SurfAid was founded in 2000 by a group of surfers who saw a need for sustainable health changes in the Mentawai Islands. Today, the nonprofit works with Indonesian nationals and facilitates fundraisers to promote health programs, water and sanitation projects, and disaster preparedness and relief.
