Malibu Brewing expands to Agoura

Local couple opens second location after finding success in Malibu

A little bit of Malibu is coming to Agoura Hills. Family-owned Malibu Brewing Company is opening its second location this week at the longtime home of Ladyface Ale Company, which served the local community for more than 15 years.

In just four years, owners Ryan and Jill Ahrens opened Malibu Brewing, which quickly earned a devoted following and then expanded the craft beer pub concept into the neighboring community with big fanfare.

An opening day ribbon-cutting ceremony was scheduled for Aug. 25 in partnership with the City of Agoura Hills and the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce. Malibu Brewing will donate 20% of opening day sales, up to $2,500, to Southeast Ventura County YMCA in Westlake Village, continuing the brewery’s support of local organizations and nonprofits through fundraisers and community partnerships it started in Malibu.

“We’re a local, family-owned business,” Ryan Ahrens said. “And everything we’ve done has been shaped by the community that supported us from the beginning.”

The hard work in expanding locations was completed by the Malibu couple and their local team of employees. “Our Malibu team helped bring this location to life,” Ryan Ahrens said. “Some of our new members of the Agoura Hills crew trained in Malibu first, and the same brewers behind our award-winning beers created two new ones in honor of the new location. They carried the care and hospitality that make our taproom feel like ours into this new space.”

“So much of our identity as a brand is tied to the spirit of the Malibu community,” Jill Ahrens said. “As we designed the Agoura Hills taproom, we spent a lot of time thinking about how to carry the warmth, ease and genuine hospitality of our original location into a new space. We wanted our neighbors just over the hill in Agoura Hills to experience the Malibu we know and love, the place our friends and neighbors call home.”

Malibu Brewing Company owners Ryan and Jill Ahrens are ready to offer Agoura Hills customers its line of delicious dishes and 22 taps, including exclusive brews like Ladyface IAPA and Overly Ambitious.

The 190-seat restaurant has undergone an extensive remodel, combining warm woods, natural textures, and indoor-outdoor design elements while preserving the character of the historic building. A central bar features 22 taps, while lounge seating and indoor dining areas surround the space. Outside, a 115-seat, all-weather patio will host live music and community programming throughout the year. Some familiar elements from the Malibu location have also made the trip across the canyon. White brick surrounds the bar, while the bar top itself is made from reclaimed bowling alley wood.

“Agoura Hills is right at the top of the canyon, so this still feels like home turf to us,” Ryan Ahrens said. “We wanted people to walk in and recognize Malibu Brewing Company right away, from the white brick around the bar to the smashburger and fish tacos that also feature on the menu in Malibu. It’s the same family, the same beer and the same seat at the table, just over the hill.”

The on-site brewhouse, a signature feature of the former Ladyface Ale Companie, has been updated and will still serve as the centerpiece of the brewery. The company plans to offer brewmaster tours, tastings, seasonal releases, and special events designed to give guests a closer look at the brewing process.

To commemorate the new location, Malibu Brewing is releasing two exclusive beers. Ladyface IPA is named for the mountain range visible from the taproom windows and patio, while Overly Ambitious, a Belgian Dubbel, was inspired by Blind Ambition, a beer served in the building during the Ladyface era. Both beers will be available on draft, while Ladyface IPA will also be sold in exclusive 16-ounce four-packs.

The menu will combine Malibu Brewing favorites with several new offerings, including the Agoura BBQ Pub Burger and the Tan Pig, a ciabatta sandwich with pulled pork, black truffle aioli, coastal coleslaw, and chile crema. Other offerings include beer-battered local red snapper Fish & Chips and the Pink Lady Salad, made with poached pear, burrata, and prosciutto. “We had fun working in little nods to our original home,” Jill Ahrens said. “The Pink Lady Salad, for example, is named after the Pink Lady mural in Malibu Canyon. Even in Agoura Hills, Malibu is still a major part of our story.”

Malibu Brewing’s Agoura Hills location is the latest chapter in the company’s expansion, with a third location at Universal CityWalk Hollywood planned to open later this year.

As the business grows beyond Malibu, the Ahrens say its original home remains at the center of the brand. “Our team is what gives the space its warmth and makes it feel like Malibu Brewing Company.”
