S.M. City Council offers school district funding increase under conditions

At its meeting last Tuesday, the Santa Monica City Council voted 4-2 that it would raise its annual contribution to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District only if it places a 10-month moratorium on forcing some special education parents to sign confidentiality agreements before their children can receive the services. The district has been asked to review its controversial policy during this moratorium. The SMMUSD Board of Education must now decide if it wants to accept those terms in exchange for the $530,000 in extra funding. The board meets again on June 28.

Look for further details of last Tuesday’s meeting, which included the testimony of former SMMUSD Chief Financial Officer Winston Braham, in Thursday’s print edition of The Malibu Times.
