Missing diver’s body found near Santa Cruz Island

[Update, 5 a.m. Monday] The diver has been identified as 59-year-old William Arlo Ooms of Solvang, according to the Associated Press. His cause of death is still under investigation.


The body of a missing diver was found on the north side of Santa Cruz Island on Friday at 4:15 p.m., according to a statement released by the United States Coast Guard. The deceased 59-year old male diver was reported missing from the 22-foot dive boat Coram Deo at around 12:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Coast Guard.

Fellow snorkelers from the dive boat discovered the Ooms’ body. The diver was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical personnel at the Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.

The search was completed due to the efforts of the National Parks Service, first responders from Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties, two Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles helicopter crews, Station Channel Islands Harbor, the Coast Guard Cutter Dorado and Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.

The Coram Deo dive boat has reportedly returned to its home port in Santa Barbara.
