The Malibu High School varsity football team opened its 2008 campaign on a winning note Friday with a 10-7 victory over Channel Island High School. The Sharks pulled out the victory in a closely contested battle with an 18-yard field goal by Jonny Palmer in the closing minutes of the game.

“We’re not going to put up a lot of points, but we kept fighting and fighting, and our defense stepped it up,” Malibu head coach Ray Humphrey told the Ventura County Star.

The Sharks (1-0) scored first in the game, with a 28-yard run for a touchdown by senior Sean Conrad. Another score did not occur in the game until late in the fourth quarter when Channel Islands (0-1) tied things up with a touchdown of its own.

Malibu has its home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Bellarmine-Jefferson (1-1). The Sharks lost to the Guards last season, 25-7.
