Battling it out in the last hours of the 2006 June Primary election were state Treasurer Phil Angelides and Controller Steve Westly for the Democratic nomination for governor, and five Democrats for the 41st Assembly District seat being vacated by Assemblymember Fran Pavley, as well as less contested races for attorney general, lieutenant governor, state controller and state treasurer, insurance commissioner and superintendent of public instruction. Several county offices, including Sheriff Leroy Baca’s seat, the assessor and Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky’s seat, whose area includes Malibu, were open for election, and two bonds were on the June 6 ballot. Proposition 81 would raise grant money for the construction or renovation of libraries, and Proposition 82 would raise money to create a voluntary preschool program for 4-year-olds through a 1.7 percent tax on individual incomes higher than $400,000 and couple’s income above $800,000.

The Times went to press before final ballots were counted. Final election results for the June 2006 Primary election can be found online at www.malibutimes.com Wednesday.
