Pepperdine Waves Volleyball Earns Win

Pepperdine Waves volleyball player Samantha Cash, who helped the team in a pair of road wins last weekend, registers a block at home earlier this season. 

The Pepperdine University women’s volleyball team captured wins on the road over 19th-ranked Kentucky on Friday and Louisville on Saturday.

The Waves beat the ranked Kentucky Wildcats with the help of Katie Messing’s 14 kills and Samantha Cash’s eight blocks. The local team made a comeback in set three, coming back from 17-23 to secure the sweep 26-24, 25-18, 25-23. The loss was Kentucky’s first of the season.

After upsetting Kentucky, Pepperdine went on to defeat the Louisville Cardinals to reach a 6-2 record for the season. Helping the Waves clinch the match were Kelley Larsen, with a career-high 19 kills, and Becca Strehlow, with a match-best 18 digs.

“The Waves played fantastic today,” head coach Nina Matthies said in a release. “They remained calm, cool and collected under pressure. I really couldn’t be hap pier with our first road trip.”

The Waves begin West Coast Conference play when they take on Santa Clara on Thursday in Malibu.
