Malibu community members will hold a rally today at Point Dume Village to protest the closing of Point Pizza Malibu, which is set to close when its lease expires at the end of December.
The “Stop the Eviction” rally, scheduled from 4 to 6:30 p.m., is expected to draw dozens of locals to peacefully protest against Point Dume Village’s leaser, Zan Marquis, who has confirmed that D’Amore’s World Famous Pizza will open its second Malibu location, an all-organic pizzeria, once Point Pizza has vacated.
Point Pizza Malibu opened at Point Dume Village in 1986. Owner Hyesong Oh announced the closure last week after she and Marquis failed to reach an extension agreement.
Organizers are encouraging attendees to make picket signs and buy pizza and other amenities from the independent businesses at the Village.
Los Angeles County Sheriffs said they are not planning on sending deputies to monitor the rally.
“We briefed officers that it was going to be happening this evening,” Sgt. Tony Arnold. “Obviously if something happened we would show up.”
