About 300 surfers rode the waves at Surfrider Beach this weekend during the 11th Annual Call to the Wall competition.
A coalition of 30 California longboard clubs participated in the two-day event, which raised money (still being counted at press time) for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a free camp for children with cancer.
Along with the contests, auctions and raffles rewarded lucky winners with a Crosby Stills and Nash guitar, jewelry by Malibu resident Bill Wall, a vacation in Mexico and three surfboards.A reception and barbecue took place on the Malibu Pier, complete with hula dancers.
For 11 years the Malibu Boardriders have put on the event to benefit the children from the camp who enjoy the thrill and excitement the ocean has to offer. It usually is the first time that some of these children have ever been on a surfboard or a kayak. Along with the water activities there were numerous beach activities like sandcastle building and tide pool exploration-and a great deal of food.
