The Reef Check Foundation honored Malibu actress Daryl Hannah and renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle, Ph.D., at its annual Reef Rescue gala Sunday at the Malibu West Beach Club. Earle, who is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, was given the Poseidon Award for lifetime achievements in marine conservation. Hannah was honored with the Reef Rescuer Award for her dedicated support and advocacy of reef conservation.

Guests at the gala signed Reef Check’s International Declaration of Reef Rights, pledging to help protect coral reefs around the world. The goal is to present the declaration signed by at least 1 million people to coral reef country governments.

The Reef Check Ocean Festival takes place this Saturday at Bluffs Park, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., prior to the screening of the animated film “Surf’s Up.” Nickelodeon’s Kyle Swann and singer Monet will make appearances at the free event, which will feature international entertainment. The declaration will be available for signing.
