What do we consider a developer? A small group of friends who want to build environmentally cohesive homes and live as neighbors?
Development is good, especially when the intent is as environmentally conscience as possible. As a Malibu resident and developer I believe the California Coastal Commission has focused on an issue (Unity of Interest) that is irrelevant to its mandate and mission. If the CCC believes, as Mr. Douglas has stated, “This is one of the three worst projects I have ever seen,” then why does the CCC approve other projects that are far more environmentally detrimental than this one?
The following are just a few examples of projects in close proximity that have been approved in the last few years that are far worse: Franciscan Ranch Road, Malibu Lagoon Renovation Project, Pepperdine University Expansion, etc.
I believe that the CCC should be consistent with their policies. Furthermore, if the CCC feels this property is so unique and special then why has it not been rezoned, designated or purchased as parkland?
The CCC is extremely important in protecting our phenomenal coastline but projects such as this are not the type we should be discouraging, especially in these economic times.
