Public invited to help shape future of Malibu's Community Lands Project at Aug. 12 joint meeting

Malibu residents will have another opportunity to help shape the future of more than 61 acres of city-owned land during a special joint public meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when the Public Parks and Property Ad Hoc Committee, Parks and Recreation Commission, and Public Works Commission gather to review preliminary design concepts for the Community Lands Project.

The meeting will be held in the Malibu City Hall Council Chambers/Civic Theater and will bring together the City Council's Public Parks and Property Ad Hoc Committee — consisting of Councilmembers Haylynn Conrad and Marianne Riggins — along with members of the Parks and Recreation Commission and Public Works Commission to discuss concepts for the city's long-term planning initiative. 

The Community Lands Project is a comprehensive planning effort that began in March 2024 to establish a long-term vision for five city-owned properties totaling more than 61 acres. The initiative is designed to gather community input and determine how the sites can best serve Malibu residents for generations to come. 

City officials are encouraging residents to participate in the planning process by reviewing the preliminary concepts and submitting comments. A general feedback form will be available on the Community Lands website homepage beginning next week, allowing community members to share ideas before and after the meeting.

The project follows more than two years of public outreach that has included community workshops, pop-up events, online surveys, commission meetings, and City Council discussions. Previous outreach has gathered feedback on priorities ranging from parks and open space to recreation, parking, environmental preservation and other potential community uses for the properties. 

The August joint meeting is part of the next phase of public review as the city refines concepts for the five properties before additional public meetings and future City Council consideration. Earlier this summer, the city announced that additional opportunities for public comment would continue through August and September as the planning process advances.
