Pepperdine's annual Waves of Flags display returns
By The Malibu Times · Sat Jul 25 2026
As the nation prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Pepperdine University is inviting the Malibu community to take part in one of the city's most powerful annual traditions — the Waves of Flags display.
Each September, nearly 3,000 American flags are planted across Alumni Park on the Pepperdine campus, with one flag representing each of the innocent lives lost in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The moving memorial, visible from Pacific Coast Highway, has become a symbol of remembrance, service, and national unity since it was first organized by Pepperdine students in 2008.
This year's display carries special significance as the nation observes the 25th anniversary of 9/11, providing an opportunity for residents, students, businesses, and community organizations to reflect on the enduring impact of the tragedy and honor the victims, first responders, and all those whose lives were forever changed.
Pepperdine is seeking volunteers to help install and remove the display. Community members may participate individually or organize teams through local businesses, civic groups, churches, or nonprofit organizations.
The flag installation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., while volunteers will return to remove the display on Friday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Waves of Flags display stretches across Alumni Park at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road, creating a striking visual tribute that has drawn visitors from throughout Southern California for nearly two decades. In addition to the American flags, the display also includes national flags representing the countries whose citizens were among those killed in the attacks.
Those interested in coordinating a volunteer team can contact Rebecca Brueckmann, Pepperdine's director of alumni affairs, at (310) 506-4334 or (805) 428-1797, or by email at Rebecca.Brueckmann@pepperdine.edu.
Additional information about the Waves of Flags tradition and volunteer registration is available through Pepperdine University's Waves of Flags website. Those wishing to volunteer can register online for either the flag-raising or flag-lowering events.
