Caltrans last week approved Malibu’s plans for an eight-mile bike route on the west side of town, City Manager Jim Thorsen said Monday. The approval, or issuance of an encroachment permit, allows the city to send out a request for proposals (RFP) from contractors to work on the project.

All shoulder parking on the north side of Pacific Coast Highway would be eliminated between Busch Drive and county line. Shoulder parking on the south (ocean) side of PCH would be eliminated in any area with insufficient space for both a bike lane and parking (16 foot minimum). Plans have also been updated to include a dedicated right-hand turn lane at Morning View Drive and PCH.

The city could put the project out to bid within the next “45 days or sooner,” Thorsen said after Monday’s meeting.
