Oscar-winning film producer and philanthropist Robert Chartoff died June 10 in Santa Monica after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 81.

Born on Aug. 26, 1933, Chartoff was raised in the Bronx, N.Y., and attended Union College and Columbia Law School, spending summer breaks working with an uncle in the entertainment industry.

After graduating from law school, Chartoff partnered with Irwin Winkler and the duo formed a talent agency, and later, Chartoff-Winkler Productions.

The company produced more than 25 features between 1967 and 1985, including ”Point Blank,” “The Mechanic” and “The Gambler.”

Chartoff-Winkler Productions received a total of 12 Academy Awards and 40 nominations, including the Academy Award for best pictures “Rocky,” “Raging Bull” and “The Right Stuff.”

In 1985, the production company dissolved, and Chartoff continued to produce films through 2013.

Chartoff is survived by wife Jenny and children Jennifer, Julie, Miranda, William and Charlie.
