Bruce Robert Dexter, who was raised in Malibu, died suddenly Sept. 29 due to a cerebral aneurysm. He was 62.

Dexter was raised on Las Flores Beach. As a teenager, he worked on sport fishing boats out of Malibu and Paradise Cove piers. He relocated to Oxnard and became a longtime resident.

After serving in the Navy for three years, Dexter ran oil boats in the Santa Barbara Channel. He also became involved in various commercial fishing ventures. After several years as a yacht captain in Mexico and California, Dexter returned to his true passion, sport fishing, in which he excelled. Family members said he had a commitment to life at sea and his love of fishing earned him the respect of fellow fishermen and the community. He also helped others and gave advice.

Dexter was preceded in death by his father, Robert F. Dexter, who died in August 1999. He is survived by his mother, Louise Dexter; sister, Lynda, and brother, Glenn Dexter.

A memorial service will take place at Cisco’s landing in Oxnard on Oct. 29 at 10 a.m.
