Community report leads deputies to investigation and three arrests

Three individuals were arrested in Malibu after a call reporting a suspicious person led Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies to investigate an apparent copper wire theft.

According to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, deputies initially responded to a report of suspicious activity in Malibu. During their investigation, deputies determined the incident involved the theft of copper wire.

The investigation ultimately resulted in the arrests of three individuals in connection with the incident.

Sheriff’s officials highlighted the case as an example of how reports from residents can assist deputies in identifying suspicious activity and investigating potential crimes.

“Another reminder that calls from our community can play an important role in helping deputies identify suspicious activity and investigate potential crimes,” the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station said in announcing the arrests.

Additional information, including the identities of those arrested, the specific location of the incident, the amount or value of copper wire involved, and the charges filed against each individual, had not been publicly released as of Saturday.

Copper wire theft has become an increasing concern throughout Los Angeles County because thieves often target electrical systems and other infrastructure for metal that can be resold as scrap. In a separate Los Angeles County case earlier this month, sheriff’s deputies recovered approximately $3,000 worth of copper wire and electrical components allegedly stolen from a commercial property in Commerce.

The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station provides law enforcement services for Malibu and several surrounding communities. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity and to call 911 when an immediate law enforcement response is needed.
