Ollies for the road

I wanted to convey my deepest gratitude to Caltrans for continuing to resist the temptation to repair the northbound roller-coaster bumps on Pacific Coast Highway, just south of Big Rock Drive.

For nearly 20 years, Malibu’s residents have thrilled to these ever-changing bumps and humps, watching them swell with every rainy season and eagerly anticipating the chance to “get air” after hitting them at just the right speed.

For a while, as I saw Caltrans dump millions into various Malibu projects this last winter, I feared that they might actually drop a few pennies into what must surely be a simple remedy to the humps, i.e. installing proper mountain drainage and then bulldozing the highway flat as it was some two decades ago. How happy I was when they decided to take the more expensive route and continue resurfacing the humps each time water seepage caused them to buckle (twice this year already!).

Malibu residents should take pause and give thanks that as long as Caltrans’ wise and caring leadership is on the case, PCH will not be repaired.

Ask Robert Iacopino when he first saw theater and he queries, “The first time that I can remember?” Although his parents had been taking him since he was very young, his first recollection is of “Cats” at the Schubert Theater: “I loved the way all the people were so energetic and alive. It was really cool to hear them singing and see them dancing. I was too little to appreciate the technical aspects, but I loved the experience of it.”

At 2, the PCH resident filmed a commercial that was never aired and a CBS promo that was. At 3, he was modeling for print ads.

He still liked being in the audience until he watched his older sister, Perrin, in Santa Monica Playhouse’s youth theater program. She performed in a “summer stock” production, he recalls. “They had the cast party at my house. I didn’t know anyone, but they all knew me as Perrin’s brother. I thought it would be really cool if they all knew my name.”

Out went the sailing lessons, at which he says he was a failure, and in came acting. He played a French detective in a 1997 summer stock production at the playhouse. “We had the cast party at my house again,” he says, “and no one called me Perrin’s brother.”

The MHS senior plans to attend college, then “do something in the world of theater.” He says this pleases his parents and stepparents — attorneys all. “I don’t want to be a lawyer,” he volunteers.

Iacopino spent three weeks this summer in the British Isles with Santa Monica Playhouse’s Young Professionals Company, his second tour across the pond with the troupe.

In Derry/Londonderry, the company gave three performances of “Alice and the Wonderful Tea Party.” What does he remember of Northern Ireland? “We set up the stage, performed and took down the stage. It was basically a lot of work.” The airline lost one of their boxes of props and costumes, which the actors scrambled to replace before their performances. The airline found the box after the company had moved on to England.

The troupe stayed at the homes of actors from Derry’s youth theater company, The Playhouse. Iacopino stayed with the family of 15-year-old actor David Rogers. “We stayed up ’til odd hours in the morning, talking, drinking tea, eating biscuits.” Fortunately the group was untouched by the firebombs set off during his stay. “A lot of the parents called,” he says, “but we weren’t aware of it. They closed down one of the streets right next to the theater we were working at, but they opened it up a half-hour later.”

The company then traveled to Monaghan, Ireland. Iacopino saw soldiers on sentry as he crossed the border. “It was weird,” he sums up. At Monaghan, the actors stayed at 19th century Castle Leslie, owned and operated by a cousin of Santa Monica Playhouse director Evelyn Rudie. “It was a bit rainy outside,” he recounts. “Inside, it was really kind of cozy. It’s exclusive. We would never have been able to stay there if Evelyn were not related.”

For week two, the troupe traveled to London, where they stayed at a dormitory at the University of London and enjoyed a busman’s holiday — seeing as much of the London theater as possible. Of the Globe Theatre, where he saw “The Merchant of Venice,” he says, “We were groundlings. The actors are right there with you. There’s a lot of interaction. They can see you.”

The Royal National Theatre set up meetings, workshops and a performance of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” for the Santa Monica group. One of the actors in “Brodie” led one of the workshops. “It was cool to have a workshop with him and then see him in the show that night,” Iacopino recalls. During the workshop, they discussed development of the play from the book, deciding which scenes were effective in reaching a theater audience.

Then, the students worked on ensemble exercises just as the Brodie cast had done. “All of the workshops were to provide us with new perspectives,” says Iacopino. “We were to take them and add them to our performances. I know I was adding things to my performance that I learned.” Another workshop focused on “status” exercises, in which the actor gives the person with whom he is interacting either higher or lower status.

He doesn’t see a difference between British and American acting styles, but says, “I find the audience is a bit different. I find American audiences to be more loud. English audiences tend to be more constrained. But they still clap a lot.”

The young actor spent little energy being a tourist. At the Tower of London, Iacopino admits, he sat in the cafe. “It was a nice cafe,” he adds apologetically. “We tried to take a tour of the Museum of the Moving Image, but we were too late, so we went to that cafe.” He did enjoy high tea at Hyde Park and an ice cream at Covent Garden.

After London, the travelers arrived in the Kenilworth/Warwick area. There, they stayed at the homes of the young actors of The Playbox Theatre. Iacopino housed with Tom Jones-Berney, 16, who has already performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The Santa Monica Playhouse troupe performed its original plays, “Alice” (Iacopino playing the Mad Hatter) and “The Silver Key” (playing a “nool,” whom he describes as co-dependent). Two performances at a local school brought surprising, disrespectful laughter from the English schoolchildren.

Iacopino ran the light board for one performance. “They sat me down five minutes before and said, ‘Move this up and down to control these lights. . . .’ It made me interested in figuring out how to really do lights.”

On the outside, the young actor enjoys scuba diving (he’s done Catalina and the Channel Islands) and studies Japanese. He also helped form The Friendship Writers Focus Group at the playhouse, which writes plays the younger actors perform at workshops.

Defending Hogin

In the interest of fair play and accuracy, Michael Schwerin’s letter regarding City Attorney Christi Hogin in the Aug. 13 edition of the Surfside News requires a reply.

In the first place, an “in-house” attorney, particularly a city attorney, cannot be judged on her win-loss record alone. The city attorney does not have the luxury of choosing her cases or clients. Her job is to advise and defend the City Council’s decisions regardless of the legal or policy reasons. Council decisions may be predicated on politically popular policies, but may make bad law. The city attorney must deal with the existing law and the facts, warts and all. It so happens that Christi Hogin has an excellent 11 wins and one loss record in cases she has handled “in-house.”

As to the cases Mr. Schwerin claims were lost by Christi Hogin:

1. The Banyan matter, which pertained to property outside the city of Malibu and involved three lawsuits. One, handled by Christi Hogin, she won. The other two were handled by Richards, Watson and Gershon, one of the pre-eminent law firms in Los Angeles specializing in representing cities and other municipalities. One was successful and the other not.

2. The Lunita Pacific matter involved a 38-unit condominium. It is important to know that the property owner had a vesting map from the County of Los Angeles prior to Malibu Cityhood which was a key in the unsuccessful attempts by the city (once again represented by Richards, Watson and Gershon), and the Broadbeach Homeowners Association to invalidate the condo subdivision. Notwithstanding the court’s decision, the city attorney negotiated a settlement proposal with the property owner that provided for six to eight single-family houses on one-plus-acre lots in lieu of the 38 condos. After a public hearing, the council, under pressure from an adjacent property owners, rejected the settlement proposal. The 38 condos are now under construction.

3. As to the Trancas Town matter, also handled by Richards, Watson and Gershon, the city lost its attempt to prevent a15 single-family residences plus 52 condo subdivision. Nevertheless, the city attorney negotiated a settlement proposal providing for 35 single-family houses on a minimum of one-acre lots in lieu of the 15 single-family houses and 52 condos. On Feb. 28, 1994, the council rejected this proposal. Thereafter in 1996, the city attorney submitted to the council a settlement proposal for a single-family subdivision of no less than one-acre lots plus dedicated ballfields to the city. The council has yet to reply to this proposal.

4. Regarding the mobile home matter, also handled by Richard, Watson and Gershon, the settlements negotiated by the city attorney secured rent control to the mobile home park residents. Nothwithstanding the city attorney’s advice to the council that a “rollback” of rents to a December1984 and CPI level was legally vulnerable, (the park owners had indicated they would not file a lawsuit if the rollback were not enacted), the council adopted the rollback resolution. Ultimately, the court found the rollback was inappropriate and the city paid damages of approximately $2 million. This may have been money the community was prepared to spend to assist the mobile home residents but to blame the city attorney for bad advice is wrong and contrary to the record.

What’s white and red all over?

I was breezing through the Los Angeles Times Westside Weekly last week, doing what we in the newspaper business call research, when I suddenly realized to my chagrin they had scooped us.

There, in simple, typically ponderous L.A. Times prose, was the announcement of the new city of Malibu design standards as promulgated by our commissioner of aesthetics, Jo Ruggles, and somehow we had missed it. Commissioner Jo, as I sure many of you know, is a member of the Malibu Planning Commission and a longtime denizen of the Paradise Cove Mobile Home Park. She is also a leading proponent of a higher standard of aesthetics in Malibu architecture.

Now, I must confess, lest I be accused of failing to disclose my bias, that I do have some difficulty in taking aesthetic advice from someone who lives or used to live in a converted Campbell soup can in the lower portion of Paradise Cove. Nevertheless, sometimes good ideas come from the most unusual sources. So, to be fair, it’s to her ideas that we have to look and not her lifestyle.

The cornerstone of her aesthetic policy, on which she’s been quoted often (and not in this newspaper, so there should be no doubts about the quote), seems to be that we shouldn’t have any white houses with red roofs. In architecture school this is often referred to as the “white house/red roof syndrome” and it’s well documented. Sufferers from this syndrome are known to talk, some say screech, endlessly until their medication is adjusted or the houses are repainted, whichever comes sooner. Anyone appearing before the Planning Commission now knows it doesn’t matter if the proposed house is puce and pink, or avocado and royal blue or even if it has an 11-foot gargoyle sitting on the roof, provided it doesn’t violate the first rule of architectural aesthetics — the house can’t be white and the roof can’t be red.

Apparently, the Planning Commission may not be of one mind on the “white house/red roof syndrome” issue, because another commissioner, Ken Kearsely, was also quoted in the same article as saying he worries about abandoning the area’s kaleidoscope charm and (and I quote), “I’m afraid it will become a Stepford Village.” Good for Ken.

The second leg of her two-legged aesthetic stool is even simpler. She apparently feels that any hillside house that’s visible from anywhere, particularly anywhere she’s standing, is an abomination and must be prevented. She is apparently a devotee of what in architectural circles are referred to as the “invisible house crowd.” It’s a tenet of their philosophy that everyone is free to build any hillside house they want provided no one else can see them because the people on the ocean or on their way to be beach like to be able to look up to the hills and see nothing but greenery and not what she refers to as “somebody’s architectural statement.” Of course, the corollary of that position is that we hill people, among whom I number myself, shouldn’t have to look down onto the ocean and be forced to see all these overly large beach houses, all cheek by jowl, because in all fairness it’s no more aesthetically pleasing for us to look at them than it is for them to look at us.

I pondered this impasse, and I’ve come up with a solution that I would like our Planning Commission to consider. After all, this is Hollywood. All we’re really talking about is a backdrop. It doesn’t have to be real, it just has to look real. So I propose that we line PCH with a large, painted backdrop. The hill people can look at their side of the backdrop, which will have an ocean uncluttered by beachfront homes, and the beach people can look to the hills, and on their side of the backdrop they’ll see nothing but verdant green. Behind the facade we can all do whatever we want. Think it over. It could work.

I want to give a fond farewell to John Clement, our director of Public Works, who is leaving us to go to the city of Santa Cruz. I’ve seen John in action, and he’s hardworking, smart, competent, honest and outspoken. In most communities, those qualities would be considered an asset, but not here. There are several on the council, who will remain nameless other then to say it isn’t House or Barovsky, who want the staff to be as invisible as Jo Ruggles’ hillside houses, and invisible was never, thankfully, a word you’d ever attach to John Clement.

Kingdom without a Crown

Heather Moran knew it was only a matter of time. Since July 14, when Crown Books Corp. filed for bankruptcy reorganization, the store manager of the Malibu branch quietly had been telling clientele to place their final orders. Quickly. A few weeks later, she stopped taking special orders altogether.

The call for closure was issued Aug. 20, after a Delaware judge granted approval for the chain to shutter 79 of its 174 stores, including 11 in Los Angeles County. From the corporate throne in Landover, Md., the edict was phoned to Crown’s provinces in four states.

“I got a call from our district manager around 3 p.m. Thursday; we closed the doors at 4,” said Moran. “We should be here for another week or two, cleaning and packing up.”

Moran will be offered a job within the district, which extends from Malibu to Westminster and east to Riverside. Most of her nine employees can expect severance packages. While the Thousand Oaks outlet falls a casualty of economic woes, the Santa Monica SuperCrown remains open.

“All outstanding orders have been transferred to Santa Monica, who have been instructed to hold them for two weeks, and our customers have been phoned,” said Moran.

With book signings and special events, the superstore has one of the highest profiles in the region. Local authors who depended upon the Malibu branch for exposure of their new works now may find themselves holding court in Santa Monica.

Whether the branch perished due to lack of profitability or whether it was surrendered to escape a costly lease is moot. Malibu is bereft of a general bookstore. In April 1997, the literary community mourned the loss of Malibu Books & Co., which had served readers for nearly 20 years. Although Crown could not hope to assume the intimacy or salon ambience of Valerie Gable’s shop, it was something. Something now gone.

Sharing the plight of many independent stores, Malibu Books & Co. could not compete with discounters such as Barnes & Noble, Borders Group, and Crown, who traditionally have negotiated extended payment terms on publishers’ shipments, and who have been able to absorb the costs of shipping back remaindered stock. Additionally, the chains have enjoyed cooperative advertising with publishers in the forms of in-store promotions, end-cap displays, flyers and newspaper ads.

Dolphins’ dirge

Last week’s story about the two dolphins escorting a dead dolphin came as no surprise to members of the Great Whales Foundation — the body washed up just a few feet from our beachfront headquarters, in the midst of a meeting! Our neighbor Beata Nielsen buried it nearby.

Was this some kind of a message? (Mr. De Herrera in his letter to the Surfside News also suggested as much.) Not only is it amazing that several dolphins escorted the dead dolphin for at least two days running, but finally that the carcass should wash ashore nearly on the doorstep of the Great Whales Foundation — out of miles and miles of Malibu coastline!

To add to the synchronicity of the event, the night before we had just hosted an inspiring talk by Mr. Scott Taylor, who travels the world researching dolphins and telling the “Legend of the Golden Dolphin.” (Scott had turned up at a party we hosted over the weekend for Dr. John Lilly, the renowned pioneer of human-dolphin communication research.) The gist of the legend (and the gist of our work here at GWF/MDRC) is that humans and dolphins have a rich and long-standing relationship, and that we have much to learn from our intelligent ocean-going cousins.

What were these dolphins trying to tell us? Were they conducting a public funeral for their pod-mate?

We’d like to suggest that this incident be taken as a reminder that a true shelter for stranded and injured dolphins is urgently needed in Southern California, and that Malibu is the perfect place to host it. For two years we have been developing a plan for just such a facility, the Malibu Dolphin Recovery Center. We have an energetic all-volunteer committee, and architectural designs. All that is lacking now for the MDRC to become a reality is a hundred yards of coastline, and a couple million dollars for construction.

Help us create a place where sick and injured dolphins, as well as “surplus” rejects from entertainment facilities and Navy labs, can recuperate and be released back to the sea, in a non-exploitative fashion.
