Malibu Canyon Crash

11:30 p.m.: Contrary to reports from Edison earlier today, a number of residents are still without power.

“More than half of the 104 units of Malibu Canyon Village Condominium complex on Civic Center Way still do not have power restored and may not have power until Sunday morning,” Malibu resident John Elman wrote in an email to The Malibu Times on Saturday night.

“The morning crash into power blew multiple transformers. Besides MCV there may be others. I am writing this by candle light on cell phone.”

3:30 p.m.: Power was fully restored to the remaining Edison customers as of 11 a.m.

Malibu Canyon Road remains closed between Seaver Drive and Mulholland as crews replace the toppled pole.

A car crashed into a power pole on Malibu Canyon Road early Saturday, causing the pole to topple over and block the road, while also leaving more than 3,000 Edison customers without power and many traffic signals malfunctioning.

Malibu Canyon Road is shut down between Seaver Drive (Pepperdine) and Mulholland Highway. There is not estimate as to when power will be restored for customers but customers should expect an “extended outage” that could last the entire day. The crash and outage were first reported at 7:35 a.m.

Power was initially knocked out for 3,363 Edison customers in the Civic Center area. By 9 a.m., power was restored for 2,221 customers. There is no estimate for when power could be back for the remaining 442 customers.

Traffic lights on PCH between Malibu Canyon Road and Topanga Canyon Boulevard were blacked out by the crash, according to Sgt. Brooks of the Malibu/Lost Hills Station. As of 9 a.m., most of those lights were restored except for Cross Creek, Webb Way, the Malibu Pier and Civic Center Drive.

An advisory from the LA County Sheriff’s Department said Malibu Canyon Road will be blocked for a majority of the day.

The accident occurred about 2 miles north of PCH on Malibu Canyon Road. The driver appeared to be “impaired,” Brooks said.

Since the accident happened on a Saturday, Brooks said drivers should expect “severe gridlock” on alternate roads like Kanan Dume Road from those traveling to the beach.
