On Sept. 21, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law Assembly Bill 902, which seeks to improve bicycle safety for adult cyclists.
The bill was authored by Assemblymember Richard Bloom, who represents California’s 50th Assembly District, which includes Malibu.
The proposed law offers a bicycle safety education course as a possible alternative to a monetary fine for adult bicyclists found in violation of the law. The “bicycle traffic school” could help cyclists wipe out fines or reduce fees that are associated with tickets.
“Everyone can benefit from safety education … this bill gives bicyclists the same opportunity that motorists already have. And, just like motorists, following safe practices can mean the difference between life and death for bicyclists, too,” Bloom said in statement provided by State Assembly staffers.
