Written in response to “Local perspectives on the new solar panel mandate,” published on May 17.

I wish to ask Professor Mataré if he has ever owned or has direct experience with anyone who owns solar panels here in California? Professor Mataré is definitely a solar buzz kill and his “predictions” are laughably ludicrous and completely devoid of logic as my direct experience as a solar panel owner for more than six years can attest. He may be somewhat right about some facts, but then he sets up straw men arguments as to the eventual outcomes that will rarely, if ever, come to pass.

My bill with SCE [Southern California Edison] is substantially reduced, my direct neighbors get the benefit of my overproduction of clean electrons and my panels are working at 100 percent efficiency, even after six years of continuous operation. I have no plans to take them to the landfill and they look fantastic on my roof.

His comments are intellectually dishonest to a high degree and, frankly, I have to wonder which corporation or industry group might be sponsoring his “studies,” as I can find no other reason to have such a negative opinion of a power system so stable, efficient and clean that directly benefits the individual homeowner over a centralized, monopolized power company.
