Carolyn Carradine made it her mission during Lent to paint all 21 historic California missions, as well as 19 scenes of California countryside she encountered along the way. Pictured, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, located near Oceanside

An artistic mission project by Malibu resident Carolyn Carradine was recently featured in the LA Times website. During Lent this year, Carradine visited and painted all 21 California missions. The remaining 19 days of Lent, Carradine painted various California countryside scenes. She did one painting per day, with no do-overs or corrections allowed. The oil paintings were each eight by ten inches and framed in Plein Air frames.

She was motivated to complete the project by her love of the fourth grade, when students learn about the California missions. Carradine took each of her children on a mission trip when they reached the fourth grade.Â
