Former NBA Player Kevin Johnson to Speak in Malibu

Former NBA All-Star-turned-politician Kevin Johnson is scheduled to appear in Malibu on Wed., Oct. 22 as part of the city and library’s ongoing speaker series.

Johnson, the current mayor of Sacramento, played in the NBA from 1987 until 1999 and has a long history of philanthropic and political work. 

In 2008 he was elected as the first African-American mayor of Sacramento and won reelection in 2012.

“In 1989, Kevin founded St. HOPE (Helping Others Pursue Excellence), a nonprofit organization originally focused around providing afterschool programs to at-risk youth in his hometown. St. HOPE expanded to pursue a broader program of urban revitalization through public education, civic leadership, economic development, and the arts,” according to an announcement from the City of Malibu.

Johnson will focus on the importance of leadership and service during his Oct. 22 appearance.
