Waxman to host local gun violence forum

Rep. Henry A. Waxman will hold a public forum on July 15 at 10 a.m. in the Santa Monica City Council Chambers entitled “Gun Violence, Mental Health, and Community Recovery: Responses to the Santa Monica Shootings.” 

Elected officials including Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor, California State Senator Ted Lieu and Board of Supervisors member Zev Yaroslavsky will make opening remarks at the event. 

Invited panelists will testify and then answer questions from the elected officials in attendance. 

Panelists will include Pamela Hyde, J.D., Administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration; Jacqueline A. Seabrooks, Santa Monica Chief of Police; Nancy Greenstein, M. D., Chair of the Board of Trustees of Santa Monica College and Suzanne Verge, Los Angeles Chapter President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. 

A little over a month has passed since Santa Monica resident John Zawahri killed seven people including his father and 26-year-old student Marcela Franco. Zawahri was shot on the Santa Monica College campus the same day.
