The City of Malibu is organizing a town hall for stakeholder groups and public agencies to discuss the ongoing environmental situation at Malibu High School, Middle School and Juan Cabrillo Elementary.

The forum is set for Thursday, Aug. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Malibu City Hall, according to City Councilwoman Laura Rosenthal, and will be broadcast on local Channel 3.

Karen Orlansky, who was recommended by Pepperdine’s Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, has been tapped to moderate the event.

“She is a local government professional and facilitator/mediator who has more than 25 years of collaborative work with elected and appointed officials, agency staff and community members on very complex and often divisive issues,” Rosenthal said in an email.

The lineup of groups and experts has not been finalized, but the city is hoping parents will gain a sense of clarity on the safety of Malibu High and its neighboring schools given a year of controversy and uncertainty surrounding environmental safety on each of the campuses.

“Our intent is to structure the August 21 [town hall] so that it maximizes our immediate objective, which is to clarify issues and provide information so that parents can make informed decisions for their families,” Rosenthal added.

The public will be able to submit questions as well, but a process for that has not been determined.

Editor’s note: This post previously incorrectly stated Orlansky worked for the Straus Institute.
