It’s the   ((((  11:45 am   ))) edition of the (((  Tuesday ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Webb Way!

Santa Anas Rake Malibu

Well … for many … there is no other way to put it.

That was a crappy night.

Nothing official … but it appears that the hottest temperature of the year was reached at Trancas Beach this morning  at 2:30 .. when it hit 95 degrees.

With many houses out here without air conditioning … it was a sleepless night.

One or two reports of downed power lines … not confirmed.

There was a report of smoke near Malibou Lake just before 9 this morning …. that triggered a full brushfire assignment from LA County fire.

Five helicopters and more than 100 firefighters we’re dispatched to the area.

No fire was found and they were all turned around.

The Southern California Edison map shows no outages.

We have no road closures.

The outlook … highs of 105 and winds up to 50.

The National Weather Service descries this as a moderate Santa Ana … with winds gusting to 40 to 60 mph over much of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties through tomorrow.

The winds should be strongest today with isolated wind damage and power outages possible.

At 2:30 this morning … at Leo Carrillo Beach in western Malibu … it was 95º … winds gusting to 22 miles per hour … 4 percent relative humidity.

And that 95 degree reading was 2 degrees over the predicted high temperature for this afternoon.

The NWS now says the heat will not end Wednesday … as originally forecast … although the wind gusts will end either late in tomorrow morning or early tomorrow afternoon.

We can look forward to 4 to 8 degrees of cooling … day after tomorrow.

Motorcycle Crash In MHS Traffic

A motorcycle and an S-U-V crashed this morning … on P C H at Guernsey.

The motorcyclist was evacuated by a county fire chopper from nearby Zuma Beach.

The crash happened on one of two routes to Malibu High School just before school started.

There’s no word if there was a student or employee involved.

3.9 Quake Midnight, Mid-Channel

Some people in Malibu reported feeling a magnitude 3 point 9 earthquake that struck at 51 seconds after midnight this morning.

The epicenter was about 45 miles south of Malibu … in the Pacific Ocean between Catalina and San Clemente islands.

City Changes Policy On House Development Permits

The Malibu City Council last night decided to cap development permits at 5 years.

The problem … people buy land … get permission to build a house … and then stall out.

The result … councilwoman Laura Rosenthal says … is a problem.

NEWSCART 77135 PERMITS LAURA :07

“We have some projects in Malibu that are taking 20 years to build, and it’s a blight on the community. “

But assistant city planner Stephanie Hawner reminded the council that development permits are not building permits.

Once a house gets approved by the Planning Commission …. the owner has to go back through a bunch of departments to get the approved concept turned into acceptable blueprints.

And that may be where the delay is.

NEWSCART 77134 PERMITS HAWNER :11 QQQQ BUILDING PERMITS ACTIVE

“As long as they;’re working under valid building permits, they can continue construction, so if they do an inspection every six moths they continue to keep their building permits active.”

The council set a three year limit on residential development permits … extendable to five years by the Planning Commission.

Rates Bedevil School, Meeting Tomorrow at 6

Malibu High School officials have called a meeting for tomorrow night at 6 … to talk with parents about the explosion in the population of rats at the school.

Between construction and last year’s wet winter … a huge population of rats has been observed terrorizing employees and students.

The district superintendent says emergency steps have been taken.

Thirty door sweeps have been installed to rodent proof classrooms.. with more on the way.

techers are being asked to keep doors closed.

Garbage cans with lids have been installed.

Workers have checked for access points into buildings.

Snap traps … glue traps … and other control measures are in place,

And the district has begun using a poison that consists of tasty food laced with megadoses of Vitamin D-3.

It takes multiple feedings to kill the rodents, hence the slow response to the bait boxes.

The vitamins cause calcium buildups in the rodents … they die of heart attacks.

The bait boxes are on the roofs and in the construction area.

Because of the rat invasion … the district has placed hand sanitizers in each classroom.

They are asking parents to remind their kids to use the sanitizers … and to throw away their trash and keep trash can lids closed.

The district will hold a meeting for students … parents and staff about the issue tomorrow at 6 p-m … at the Malibu High School Auditorium.

Every 15 Minutes, Thursday Night

That’s tomorrow night.

On Thursday night … the school is hosting an encore video presentation of Every Fifteen Minutes.

It depicts a fatal car crash involving distracted teenage drivers … it focuses on the aftermath of the accident, including legal proceedings and a student funeral.

Parents from all grades are encouraged by the school P T S A to attend and high school students are also welcome.

But this is not suitable for middle schoolers

There’s a  brief PTSA Association meeting at 6.30PM followed by the screening at 7PM.  Snacks will be provided by PTSA

and we encourage you to come and see this excellent film for yourself.
