San Bernardino City Unified School District superintendent Dale Marsden was recently named the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology Superintendent of the Year.
Nominees for the annual award were evaluated based on visionary leadership, instructional leadership, family and community involvement, ethical leadership, and building leadership capacity, organizational management and advocacy.
Marsden was recognized for demonstrating these qualities through his broad-based community engagement-focused initiatives and the work he has done to transform San Bernadino from a city of bankruptcy to a community of excellence.
Marsden’s approach has resulted in historical graduation increases and a 50 percent reduction in student suspensions and citations. He also played a major role in the Alliance for Education’s STEAM 2020 initiative aimed at securing America’s leadership in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
The Superintendent Advisory Council honored Marsden and other California superintendents at a reception on Jan. 28.
