Woman Killed at Santa Monica Assisted Living Facility; Suspect Arrested

A woman was killed Saturday evening at an assisted living facility serving adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities in Santa Monica, and police say a suspect is now in custody.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department, officers responded at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, to a report of a woman in need of medical attention in the 1900 block of Pico Boulevard, near Santa Monica College.

When officers arrived, they found the woman suffering from what police described as "significant injuries." Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's identity has not been released pending notification of her family.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. Saturday, the Santa Monica Police Department announced that a suspect had been taken into custody.

"There are no additional suspects being sought at this time," the department said in a statement. "The investigation remains active and ongoing."

According to news reports, Santa Monica Police Lt. Lewis Gilmour said the fatal attack occurred at The Manor, a residential care facility that provides housing, supervision, and support for adults living with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The facility's website states it has offered room, board, care, and supervision since the 1960s.

Authorities have not yet released details about the relationship between the suspect and the victim or what may have led to the incident. The identity of the suspect has also not been made public.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
