Volunteer for Pepperdine’s Annual ‘Waves of Flags’ 9/11 Memorial

Community members, local businesses and organizations are invited to join Pepperdine University in preparing its annual “Waves of Flags” memorial, a powerful tribute honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

This year’s display carries added significance as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

Nearly 3,000 American flags will once again fill Pepperdine’s Alumni Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with each flag representing a life lost in the attacks. The annual display has become one of Malibu’s most recognizable traditions of remembrance, service and national unity.

Volunteers are needed to help raise and place the flags on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Individuals, families, businesses, community organizations and other groups are welcome to participate.

The flags will remain on display at Alumni Park through Friday, Sept. 18. Volunteers are also needed that day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help lower and remove the flags.

The Waves of Flags tradition brings members of the Pepperdine and greater Malibu communities together each September to remember those who died, honor their families and ensure the events and sacrifices of Sept. 11 are not forgotten by future generations.
