I would like to express a very special “thank you” to Brad and Cati Norris of Malibu Health and Rehabilitation for their hosting of Saturday evening’s charitable event which raised money for Lyme Disease research and education.

Lyme disease has affected many of our friends and family members within the local area. Yet we are continually being told that there is no Lyme Disease in Southern California. A historical overview proves quite the contrary.

Ticks have been in existence since the Ice Age. They are carried worldwide by migratory birds, thus expanding the cycle to large animals, rodents, house pets, etc. Lyme Disease has been identified in European medical literature since the 1800s, but only recently recognized in the United States since the 1970s, by Polly Murry of Lyme, Conn. Polly is a mother like myself who suspected that an infectious agent was making people in her community sick.

Lyme Disease is a multisystem disorder. The lyme spirochete spreads to the central nervous system within a matter of hours following a bite. The tick may be as tiny as a point of a pin. Only about 50 percent of the patients exhibit a rash.

Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis, based on symptoms. A person may test negative and still have Lyme disease. There is a list of approximately 41 symptoms, everything including memory impairment, intermittent joint and muscle pains, stomach aches, seizure episode, eye disorders, fatigue, cardiac manifestation, endocrine problems, etc. A person may have just one symptom and still have Lyme disease. I have met patients who become ill immediately, and others who take years before the onset of symptoms. This is because the Lyme bacterium can lie dormant for months. Many patients live with subclinical symptoms their entire lives.

I was misdiagnosed with everything: rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, dental jaw pain, attention deficit disorder, depression. “This is what over-40 feels like, go home and live with it!” I have been under oral combination antibiotic treatment for over three years. There is no cure for disseminated or late Lyme disease.

Since Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease next to AIDS and the No. 1 vector-borne disease in the United States, public awareness and physician education programs are essential to this preventable disease, which can be acquired by anyone who ventures outdoors.

In addition, thank you to Dr. Jeff Harris for his sensitivity and responsiveness in recognizing and treating the wide range of symptoms caused by Lyme disease and related tick disorders.

When Malibu High School handed out its senior awards in June, one of its seniors was noticeably absent. Jonathan Kaplan had won a Bank of America Achievement Award for drama. His younger brother accepted the award on his behalf. “Jonathan is acting on Broadway and is unable to accept,” ran the announcement of his absence.

Kaplan attended MHS and New York’s Professional Performing Arts School. “When the Malibu High awards were being handed out,” he says, “I was in New York graduating from my high school there.” Not to worry, he also received an award from PPAS — for Most Professional.

Even for that school, Kaplan was ahead of the crowd, having received a 1992 Tony Award nomination as best featured actor in a musical and a 1992 Theatre World Award, the youngest recipient in the award’s 48-year history.

The young performer appreciated the academic environment at MHS, but says, “I love New York. I wish MHS and the sunshine could be in New York.”

Born in Detroit, Kaplan quickly became accustomed to the bicoastal life that was later to be his as an actor. “My mother was a corporate lawyer, and we were constantly moving around because of jobs.” Virginia, Ohio and Northern California soon became home to the Kaplans. “My dad got an MBA at Stanford,” Kaplan says. “That was the longest we’ve ever stayed in a single place.”

He began his acting career at age 5 in Cincinnati. “The first show I ever did was ridiculously easy,” he claims. “My entire job was to run on, hug an old lady and run off again.” He can’t recall the name of the “old lady,” but he’s sure she wasn’t a well-known actor. “It was my favorite play so far, and I knew from that moment this was what I wanted to do.”

As a young lad living in Cupertino, Northern California, he took on 22 shows in 2.5 years.

From there, he and his mother, Susan, made a joint decision to see what New York could offer. His brother, Daniel, and sister, Katie, came with them for the summer. No work materialized. The siblings left; he and his mother stayed on. Eventually he was cast in the off-Broadway production of “Loman Family Picnic” (with Christine Baranski), then in “Rags” with the American Jewish Theater. By winter, he had booked “Falsettos.”

He likes being told the truth by his directors. “‘Fine’ is not a good thing,” he says. “You want to be told the real deal. You want to be told that your choices are strong.” He claims to have had a few rough starts with directors. “But a lot of good came out of it. Everything has been an uphill climb. I’m really proud that I’ve made such a climb. You look down on the road and see the bumps, and you’ve passed them. They’re gone, and new and exciting days are ahead.”

As for actors, he says, “I’ve been very fortunate because I’ve never worked with anyone whose ego was too big to deal with. I love when actors have the connection.”

His professional goal is to be adept at Shakespeare. He admired a recent production of “Twelfth Night.” “I was impressed that the stars, who used their names to get people to come to the show, were really committed to their characters. I thought that Paul Rudd was good. I liked Helen Hunt. Philip Bosco was unbelievable. They made the language so much more than I had seen in a while.”

At MHS, he starred in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” “I thought we did a pretty decent job,” he offers. “A lot of credit needs to be given to Mr. Nashel [MHS’s theater teacher] because he pulled it together.” Nashel and Vice Principal Patricia Cairns traveled to New York to support Kaplan at his opening night performance in “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Still, he recalls his most embarrassing moment on stage — at a MHS pep rally, when he tripped and fell while exiting the stage.

Meanwhile, his mother has been encouraging her children’s academic development. “When we bring home good assignments, she’s really proud of us,” he says. “When we’re struggling a little bit, she tries to find out why.” His mother has also talked up Ivy League schools to her children. Kaplan is currently considering Brown University. “I really like the campus, but it’s not quite Pepperdine,” he notes. He will pursue a liberal arts education, probably studying psychology, “in case the acting doesn’t work out.”

He recently completed the Yale University Drama Summer Program, which he calls really, really educational. “It was defining what I felt instinctively.” He hopes to always be refining his work. “I’ve had the good fortune to go to a lot of good acting courses,” he says, San Francisco’s ACT among them. “And some hideous ones, but you learn to identify them quickly and get out as soon as possible.”

He is applying to East Coast colleges, while taking courses at Pepperdine — “Italian, because I hope to go to Italy in February, and choir.”

Lately, at least, things seem normal at the Kaplan home. “Katie just got her license and she’s very excited about that,” says her big brother. “She’s now like a taxi service for all of her friends.” Meanwhile, Kaplan thrills at seeing famous people in Malibu. “You just want to run up to them and shake their hand,” he says, “not to get an autograph, because that would be fan-like, but to tell them you like them and to encourage their work.”

Everybody in the bar leaned forward as the pitcher got ready. Even people who never gave a thought to baseball were drawn in and tense. We were all waiting for history to be made, for the big redhead to uncork one.

McGwire is the perfect American hero. He’s Paul Bunyanesque in size, with arms the size of oak limbs. A gentle giant, with a nice sense of humor and a generally genial nature. Like Babe Ruth, he’s larger than life and seems to do what he does best with a sense of joy. He’s also modest and generous in a way that many of our talented, highly paid and neurotically self-centered athletes are not. He’s a divorced father in a nation filled with divorced fathers with an obvious close, loving relationship with his son. His 10-year-old son, outfitted as a Cardinal bat boy, was there in the dugout filling in for thousands of young boys and girls who wanted to be there also. His folks, beaming, were in the stands. The rest of us, also beaming, were sitting in front of TV sets all over America, and waiting.

When it happened, when he connected and the ball took off to the left field stands and began to look like it might curve foul, McGwire froze, while millions of Americans leaned right to keep it fair. Then pandemonium. A sense of joy. A sense of release. A sense, for the first time in a long while, that watching something on TV actually made you feel better.

As he went around the base path, accepting congratulations from ballplayers on both teams, umpires and fans, and finally crossed home plate and carried his son to the dugout, we all felt a part, sharing the intimacy of a very public, private moment, and we all felt good.

As I thought about it, it’s been quite a while since we all felt good.

Events seem to conspire to make us feel bad.

The market seems to have peaked and is starting on the downhill slope. Economies all over the world are stalling, and we’re beginning to feel the effects. You can feel it sliding out front under us like loose sand. The president is in trouble, serious trouble, and no matter what you think about it, bottom line it makes you feel lousy. A plane crashes, and embassies blow up. There doesn’t seem to be much joy out there.

And then comes McGwire, and I feel good now, but I’m afraid it won’t last. I can smell it coming. I know the way the game is played in our world of mass and immediate communication. The higher we put someone on a pedestal, and certainly McGwire is on a pedestal now, the quicker we pull him down.

I don’t want to know the intimate details of McGwire’s life. I don’t want to know his sexual habits or see them exposed, explored and analyzed on talk shows. I don’t want to know what substances he ingests. I don’t want to know about his divorce or hear any tell-all tales about casual, one-night friendships struck up in a hotel bar. I don’t want to hear the grumbling of former teammates, unhappy business partners or parents of a kid his son played against in Little League. I want him to stay a hero.

If we are ever to end this craziness we live in where we have the need to tear down all our heroes just as fast as we elevate them, we have to be able to say, when the revisionist history comes, and it always does come, “Spare us the details.”

With notice that repair of the so-called Las Flores-PCH landslide may take “into next year” [“Caltrans nixes third lane on PCH”, Aug. 27] and the continued absence of any comments from the city geologists about the real character of the slide, it is time for a few comments from the gallery. We have been told on various occasions that it was a reactivated prehistoric landslide, that it would require excavating a volume to fill 20 Rose Bowls, later changed to two Rose Bowls, and that it was caused by El Nino-related rains. None of those assertions is true.

There was no prehistoric landslide, but rather a localized spalling section of highway road cut. El Nino rains may have added indirectly to the problem, but, in fact, the slide was caused by a relatively small area at the base of the cut saturated with ground water. The surface of the cut there had been spalling away for at least the last 10 years to my certain recollection. Finally, during one episode of spalling earlier this year, enough material fell on the side of the highway that Caltrans decided to eliminate the over-steepened section by excavating back to more stable gradients. The volume thus far excavated I estimate to be somewhere between 60,000 and 80,000 cubic yards, say with bulking a maximum of 100,000 cubic yards, which is no more than two or three tenths the volume of the Rose Bowl even on New Year’s Day.

The slope at the base of which the road cut was made when PCH was last widened in the 1940s is about 200 feet high. The lower 150 feet or so of that slope is underlain by sandstones and shales of the bedrock Calabasas Formation. The cut itself in that section was only about 60 feet high. Overlying the bedrock is about 25-40 feet of terrace deposits composed mostly of consolidated silty sands and gravels, up to the level of Sierks Way cul-de-sac. The two houses that recently had to be razed were built upon these terrace deposits.

Caltrans decided to cut back the slope to about 34 degrees from horizontal in the bedrock and about 26 degrees in the terrace deposits. In the process, Calabasas bedrock supporting an outer section of the terrace deposits was removed. The terrace deposits then failed, in the process initiating movement that eventually would have destroyed the two houses at the end of Sierks Way.

It was wrong to cut back the entire slope, especially without considering the effect on the terrace deposits. Nearby sections of the Calabasas Formation are historically stable in slopes quite a bit steeper than 34 degrees, as is apparent, for example, in the cut for Rambla Pacifico just north of PCH. A better approach would have been to cut away the spalling section of road cut to a gradient no steeper than about 45 degrees, install hydrauger drains, and erect a barrier fence to protect against future spalling failures — in other words, live with the condition much as we do at many other places along PCH. There was no reason to fear a deep-seated failure in the Calabasas Formation and hence no reason to engage in the massive regrading operation that has so badly disrupted traffic this summer.

I do not see why the current repairs cannot be completed in a few weeks. The existing newly graded slope should be at least as stable now as it was historically for many years at a much steeper gradient. A bench, apparently now under construction, is needed at the base of the terrace deposits to prevent dislodgement of basal conglomerate boulders such as those that rolled down the slope some weeks ago during initial grading operations. That, and removal of loose debris still on the slope, should finish the job.

It would be a mistake to go to the time and expense of an impact wall such as that recently erected near Moonshadows where a true avalanche risk extends to the top of the slope. It would be an even worse mistake to erect a “250-foot buttress wall” as reported in the Surfside News [Aug. 27]. Perhaps the term “buttress” was used in error. A buttress provides a supporting reaction force. No such support is needed because the regraded slope clearly has a high safety factor and cannot produce a force to react against. The major effort which causes traffic delays, that of hauling, should now be over within a few days. I am interested to know what else Caltrans feels the job requires that would run it into next year, and I think city officials should be similarly interested.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and members of the Malibu Association of Realtors, I would like to express our concerns about the construction by Caltrans on Pacific Coast Highway at Las Flores Canyon Road.

Our hope is that Speaker Pro Tem Kuehl and you would relay the thoughts of your constituents: business people, representatives of the real estate profession, the largest industry in Malibu, and the residents in general to the California Department of Transportation.

With great distress we have recently learned that Caltrans has made three new decisions concerning the aforementioned construction site:

They have canceled the original promised concept of opening a third lane;

They have shortened their work hours form 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.;

They have cut the work week from seven days to five.

As a widespread community organization, we find these decisions to be unreasonable. We would like to encourage you to insist that Caltrans continue with the original seven-day work week necessary for the economy of the City. It’s already been reported that the sales receipts are down in Malibu. We, as Realtors, are painfully aware of the inconvenience the two-lane highway has caused commuters, businesses, prospective buyers and sellers in need of marketing their properties.

We believe that the City, its residents and its economical status will be extremely affected if we are strapped with only two lanes of highway through the end of this year. Furthermore, if the rains do slow down the project this winter, the two lanes will be in place a great deal longer. It seems prudent to spend the time now to organize the third lane in order to keep the City and its residents thriving throughout this ordeal.

We wholeheartedly solicit your assistance in making our positions, and what we believe to be the position of the majority of the residents and businesses clear to the California Department of Transportation.
