Legacy Park transitions into fall with art, poetry and nature programs

Final summer Art Walk closes the season as Malibu prepares for nature walks, storytime, and a native plant giveaway this fall

As summer comes to a close, the City of Malibu is transitioning its Legacy Park programming into fall with a lineup of activities celebrating the community’s natural environment, local artists and poetry.

The final Art Walk and live performance of the summer season took place last weekend on Sunday, Sept. 13, bringing residents and visitors together for a day of art and performance at Legacy Park.

Coordinated by the Malibu Arts Association and hosted by the City of Malibu Arts Commission, the free Art Walkfeatured local artists showcasing and selling original artwork and prints, including pieces inspired by Malibu’s landscape and natural beauty. The day also included the season’s final live performance in partnership with the Young Actors Project.

With the summer events now complete, the city is turning its attention to a series of fall programs designed to encourage families and residents to experience Legacy Park in a different way.

The first Nature Walk and Storytime of the fall is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m., followed by programs on Oct. 21 and Nov. 18 at the same time.

Designed for children ages 5 and younger and their caregivers, the program combines storytelling with outdoor exploration. Children will have opportunities to learn about local waterfowl, observe wildlife, and discover the importance of native gardens and the role they play in supporting Malibu’s ecosystem.

Another fall highlight will be a Native Plant Giveaway on Sunday, Nov. 8, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Presented in partnership with the Los Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Division, the event will allow community members to take home a native plant and bring a piece of the Santa Monica Mountains landscape into their own gardens and homes.

Art and poetry will also remain part of the Legacy Park experience throughout the season. Visitors can walk the Poetry Stone Path, which features works by past Malibu Poet Laureates incorporated into the park, and view the latest Verse About Town selections featuring poetry submitted by local artists. Verse About Town displays can also be found at Malibu Bluffs Park and the Malibu Library.

The fall programming brings together the City of Malibu Community Services Department, Malibu Arts Commission, Malibu Arts Association, Malibu Poet Laureate, Malibu Library, Young Actors Project and Los Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Division.

Together, the programs offer residents a chance to enjoy Legacy Park beyond the summer months while connecting art, poetry, education, and the natural environment.
