Brodrick “Rick” Dunlap 1962-2026
By Malibu Times · Fri May 22 2026
Brodrick “Rick” Dunlap passed away on April 7, 2026, while surfing off the Channel Islands with friends. He was 64.
Rick was born on March 28, 1962. A fourth-generation Malibuite and ninth-generation Californian, he grew up with his sister, Anita, in the first home built on Carbon Beach, constructed in 1928.
From an early age, Rick lived life in constant motion. He spent his youth surfing and skateboarding, and later found joy in dirt biking, racing cars, riding jet skis, and taking family and friends on adventures aboard his yellow speedboat, the Schiada Bee in Malibu.
Rick was a devoted father to his daughters, Cristina and Tiare. He coached nearly all of their soccer teams and shared with them his love of the ocean, animals, art, California history, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was also a beloved grandfather to Gia Orlando, whom he took on trips to the zoo and the train museum, and whom he delighted in teaching to drive the pink toy Jeep he had given her.
Rick spent nearly 25 years in Malibu real estate, where his deep local knowledge, easy conversation, and genuine love for the community left a lasting impression on clients and colleagues alike. After retiring, he moved to Oxnard, where he pursued his passion for restoring and racing cars, earning first-place finishes at both Willow Springs and Buttonwillow raceways. In Oxnard, he built another close-knit community of friends, sharing boat trips, jet ski rides, beach bike rides, barbecues, and countless sunsets.
Those who knew Rick will remember him as a larger-than-life presence who turned strangers into friends wherever he went. He had an open and generous heart and was always just a phone call away — ready to lend a hand, set off on an adventure, or simply sit and watch the sunset.
Rick is survived by his daughters, Cristina and Tiare Dunlap; his granddaughter, Gia Orlando; and his sister, Anita Dunlap.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held in Malibu this summer. For more information, please email rememberingrick28@gmail.com.
