The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District launched a “continuous energy initiative” on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The initiative, based on a report from Ecova, Inc.—a Washington-based energy company—will be implemented districtwide under sustainability coordinator Caroline Coster and the Facility Improvement Projects department.

Coster met with the district’s chief operations officer Carey Upton and district stakeholders to discuss a “realistic and specific energy management plan,” according to information provided by the district. The plan includes recommendations for reducing energy through feasible goals, such as turning off lights and technology.

“If students adopt these daily behaviors while they are young and practice them daily, they will be active participants in reducing energy throughout the district,” Coster said in SMMUSD statement.

The district also sent out an email to parents regarding a “School Climate Survey.” The survey is designed to set students up for success during and post-high school years.

“The strength of Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District lies in the partnerships forged with the diverse communities served,” the email began.

The survey will be offered in English and Spanish online.
