In response to “Notable American quotations” published on Feb. 15.

In your Feb. 25 letter to the editor, “Notable American quotations,” the following quote is not attributed to the correct source.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free … “

Poet Emma Lazarus wrote this sonnet in 1883.

Mr. William E. Freije attributes the quote to the American Statue of Liberty.

A statue cannot write poetry.

Miss Lazarus’ poem was inscribed on a plaque, which was then mounted on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in 1903.
