Locals are invited to join Malibu students for “The Family March Against Gun Violence” on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 9 a.m. The march will begin at the entrance to Zuma Beach and end at the Malibu High School parking lot. Once the crowd reaches the school, a program of speakers has been scheduled.

The march is a result of last Wednesday’s school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Survivors have continuously advocated for gun control in the ensuing days.

MHS parent Ali Thonson, in a phone interview with The Malibu Times, said she was asked to help and attend the march. A group of students and parents met at a Point Dume home on Tuesday to divvy up tasks and responsibilities.

“It was [about] getting the word out,” she said.

In addition, they helped secure a location (which included getting permission from the high school), get people to speak, create posters and other logistical coordinating.

“I would say 10-12 parents [were involved],” Thonson said, adding that the same amount of kids were also in the group.

She cited MHS student Collette Aldrich as the organizer.
