The Malibu High School girls' varsity basketball team competes for a rebound in a game against Viewpoint School.

The Malibu High School girls’ varsity basketball team last week won their first game of the 2009 season at and against Viewpoint School, 62-40.

The Sharks played without leading scorer Danielle Bush, who was on vacation. The leading scorers of the game were junior guard Hannah Robinson, with 21 points, and freshman guard Helena Vazelakis, with 20.

“We certainly don’t have a lot of height this year, but these girls make up for it with quickness, speed and good old-fashioned hustle,” head coach Andy Meyer said in a recent press release. “Although it is somewhat unusual and unorthodox, I won’t hesitate to have four guards on the floor at the same time in the right situation,” Meyer continued. “It appears this team should prove to be a formidable foe when our regular season starts in the fall.”

This was the team’s only scheduled game of the summer, as they prepare for the fall season.
