CineMalibu, the outdoor movie series, begins its second season on Saturday at the Malibu Pier with the screening of the 2002 surf classic “Step Into Liquid.” Money raised from the event will go toward the city of Malibu’s Legacy Park Fund.

The CineMalibu program began last year in response to the April fire in Cross Creek Plaza that destroyed the New Malibu Theater. Three films were screened during the summer at Bluffs Park, with large crowds attending all the shows.

The program is headed by the city of Malibu and The Malibu Times, with Wealth Management Group sponsoring the series. Malibu Pier Partners LLC is hosting the “Step Into Liquid” screening.

“CineMalibu is a fine example of various interests coming together to create something very special for the people of Malibu,” said Karen York, co-publisher of The Malibu Times.

“Step Into Liquid” was chosen as the first film for CineMalibu’s second season, according to a press release, “to showcase and celebrate the spirt of Malibu’s rich surfing history.”

The film includes interviews and surfing performances from Malibu resident Laird Hamilton and an introduction to former Malibu High School student Jesse Billauer, who continues to surf despite suffering a near fatal surfing accident in Malibu.

Kathy Kohner, the real “Gidget,” will attend Saturday’s event. Numerous surfing legends, including the film’s director Dana Brown, are also expected to attend.

Seating for the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be provided at the pier. Parking will be available at the pier and in nearby lots, including the Surfrider parking lot. There is a suggested donation for admission of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 17, students and seniors over 65.

Popcorn, soda, candy, CineMalibu T-shirts and “Step Into Liquid” hats will be available for sale, and Mo’s Restaurant will be selling food and drinks.

Money raised from the event will go toward the development of Legacy Park, the future name of the 20-acre Chili Cook-Off site property that the city of Malibu purchased earlier this year.

CineMalibu will continue later in the summer with at least three more screenings at Bluffs Park.

“Jaws” is scheduled for June 30, with proceeds benefiting the Shark Fund, the nonprofit group that raises money for Malibu High. “Hair” will be screened on Aug. 5. That event will be hosted by and benefit the Artifac Tree, the local nonprofit store that sells donated items. Also, on Aug. 26, a “Sound of Music” sing-a-long event will take place.

CineMalibu consultant David Lyons said other events are being planned. The dates for the other programs will be announced later.
