    Exotic musical casts a spell

By Juliet Schoen/Special to The Malibu Times

The musical/opera from Korea “The Last Empress,” playing through May 4 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, is a delight for the eyes and the ears and highly recommended to those who enjoy good theater.

In telling the story of Queen Min, who reigned for 30 years at the end of the 19th century, an important part of the history of the Chosun dynasty is depicted. The many, many scenes move along swiftly, with lavish sets, seductive lighting and more than 600 costumes. A full, live orchestra is in the pit offering music that is quite accessible.

The singers have excellent voices and can act. In addition, wonderful dancing is introduced, including men flashing their swords and women twirling their long sleeves. This is an exciting experience, quite unique. And there is no need to understand the language. The supratitles tell it like it is.
