The nose knows

Regarding the Emmingers’ letter, the councilmembers should be aware that we have lived in our home, adjoining the Dylan property on two sides of our lot, since before he bought the land and built on it over 30 years. We live more or less downwind from him, not across the street and slightly upwind, as the Emmingers do.

Our across-the-street neighbors, the Burrights, have been around even longer than we have and also live downwind of the property in question. Neither we nor the Burrights have ever noticed odors, whether from chemical toilets or any other source, from the property.

Bob Dylan is a celebrity and employs round-the-clock security guards to prevent harassment from some of his older generation fans who really were, some of them, affected by chemicals.

Frankly, we are grateful for the fact that he has been utilizing these modern port a-potties for the guards, and paying for their upkeep on a regular basis, instead of resorting to alternatives that anyone who has lived in “rural” Malibu for even a short time can easily imagine.

The potties in use appear to us to be the same type that city, county and state government entities use, sometimes on a permanent basis, at parks, beach sites and other places where there is no other readily available alternative.

We don’t wish to appear inhospitable or unneighborly, but perhaps the Emmingers should consider living in another community. They should definitely consider shutting down the five large diameter fans they have installed and are running 24/7, blowing in the same direction as the prevailing breeze and consuming what must be a lot of carbon-consuming electricity.
