Adela Carcano, children’s fiction winner of the ‘One Book, One City-Malibu’ writing contest.

An awards ceremony for the contestants of the “One Book, One City-Malibu” writing contest took place at Diesel, A Bookstore on Saturday.

About 50 celebrants and 12 readers, from ages eight to 80 attended. The theme this year was personal stories of Malibu: fictional, true and poetic. The winner for the children’s entries was a short story called “To the Top of Malibu,” by eight-year-old Adele Carcano. There were three winners for the adult contest. For poetry, Bernard Casey won for his poem, “Mighty Warriors of Carbon Beach,” which he submitted from Derry City, Northern Ireland.

The fiction winner was Gary Hoffman for his short story, “A Malibu True Love Story.” For nonfiction, Orrel P. Reed Jr. won with his autobiographical, “The Malibu Fire Hears Elgar.”
