OLM track & field performs well at CYO Championships

The Our Lady of Malibu track and field team had several stellar performances last Wednesday in the Greater Los Angeles CYO Championships at Serra High School in Gardena.

Carolyn Pushaw was second in the shot put, while Alexandra Gettings placed fourth in the event. Ashley Hibler finished third in the long jump.

Nicole McMahan was eighth in the 400-meter run, and the girls 400-meter relay team of Claire Kiefer, Tatiana Cosentino, Julia Townsend and Gina Rogari placed seventh.

Athletes from 81 schools participated in the competition.

Malibu High boys tennis team captures Tri-Valley League title

The Malibu High School boys tennis squad, in its first year of competition in the Tri-Valley League, completed a nine-win, one-loss season last week to capture the league title and secure an invitation to the CIF playoffs.

The team’s opening playoff match will be against Palmdale High on Thursday either at the Malibu Racquet Club at 1 p.m. or at Malibu High at 3 p.m.

In a surprise move, Malibu was elevated into Division Three from Division Four, which will mean stiffer competition in the tournament. The move was possibly prompted by Malibu’s high level of play this year, head coach Chris Reutinger said.

Malibu defeated Oaks Christian, Nordhoff, Oak Park, Carpinteria and St. Bonaventure on its way to the Tri-Valley championship. By the time of its final match against Nordhoff last Monday, which it won 14-4, the team had already accumulated enough points to secure the title. Malibu’s only loss during the season was a close one to Oak Park, which finished second in the standings with a 7-3 record.

“I’m so very proud of these boys,” Reutinger said. “This is a team that has the potential to take it all if it plays up to its potential.”

Malibu reached the quarterfinals of the CIF tournament in 2003 and 2004.

This year’s team includes Dan Moss, one of the top 20 16-year-olds in the nation. His teammate, Alex Purewal, is one of the top 50 18-year-olds in Southern California.
