A Ventura County search and rescue team member was killed early February while assisting people involved in a traffic incident on the 5 Freeway in Los Angeles County.

Jeff Dye, part of the Ventura County Fillmore Mountain SAR team, was travelling with other members of the team on Feb. 2 when they stopped at the scene, which involved an overturned truck. He was “struck and killed by another vehicle” that lost control while on the scene, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. (Heavy rain fell in the Southern California region that day.)

The team was on its way to Mount Pinos for training.

Three other members were injured; according to VCSD, two of them are still in critical condition at the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita. The third was discharged from the hospital.
