As actual demolition of houses has begin … state and federal officials say they have just finished removing Household hazardous waste from burned down properties in malibu and elsewhere.

Hazmat poisons were removed from more than 99 percent of properties affected by the Hill and Woolsey fires.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Department of Toxic Substances Control cleared the waste in the first phase of the cleanup. During the second phase, the state agency will deal with remaining properties.

Things like paint, solvents, pesticides, fuel, batteries and other combustible items were removed in the emergency project . which began December Thrid,

Crews could not enter about 75 properties due to a locked gate, property owner who denied access, dangerous trees or terrain, unstable structures or other unsafe conditions. The Department of Toxic Substances Control will continue to work on these properties.
