The nonprofit organization Roots & Wings Institute for Personal Growth and Family Excellence, which specializes in counseling and educating the community, received a $200,000 donation from the Malibu Foundation earlier this year.

The money, according to an emailed statement, allowed the nonprofit to provide 10 sessions of free counseling to more than 100 community members. To cover the need, Roots & Wings partnered with local therapists.

In the statement, Roots & Wings founder and director Jennifer Johnston-Jones said, “We had to do something. We kept getting calls from people who lost everything asking if we could help them.”

“I knew we had to find a way to help so we contacted the Malibu Foundation and they helped cover some of the cost,” she added.

This specific program is focused on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and neurofeedback—which are “evidence-based and trauma-informed” practices.

In addition to the donation from the Malibu Foundation, Roots & Wings also received support from the Malibu Lumber Yard and Regus offices.
