Malibu High School sports wrap (Oct. 4-8)

As the league portions of many teams’ schedules get underway, several Malibu High School sports teams are beginning to distinguish themselves in their respective leagues. Here’s a recap of last week’s action.

Girls tennis: The team had two league games last week, one against Oaks Christian and the other against Nordhoff. The Sharks faced a tough team in rival Oaks Christian on Tuesday, as the Lions are one of the teams poised to challenge Malibu for a league title. The match was only partially completed because rain forced the teams to reschedule the rest of the match for another day. The Sharks defeated Nordhoff on Thursday. The team faces defending league champion La Reina Saint Bonaventure this week.

Girls volleyball: The team opened last week with a resounding win over Santa Paula. The Sharks faced their toughest test of the season on Thursday night in Grace Brethren, the main competition for the league title. Malibu lost the match in a tough contest, but the Sharks will have another shot on Oct. 26. This week the Sharks continue league play with matches against Carpinteria and Santa Clara.

Cross country: The boys and girls teams did not have a meet last week, but instead spent the full week in training for this week’s league meet in Santa Clara on Thursday.

Boys water polo: The team won both games of the week handily. The boys took care of both Nordhoff and Villanova Prep, with senior Ryan Brown scoring three goals in each game. The Sharks will take on Carpinteria and rival Oaks Christian, who the Sharks beat 3-2 earlier this season, this week.
