Mayor John Sibert has officially taken a stand to “uphold marriage equality for all citizens,” signing his name to an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court on behalf of two national organizations: Mayors for the Freedom to Marry and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
The staff report from Monday’s city council meeting gives more details as to the contents of the brief.
“By stating that the freedom to marry is a fundamental right of all citizens, including gay and lesbian citizens, the brief respectfully requests the Supreme Court reverse the judgment of the Sixth Circuit Court, and hold that states may not deny gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry nor the equal respect for their lawful marriages,” the staff report states.
Sibert’s name goes along with the names of mayors from over 475 other cities including Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
Council voted unanimously to ratify Sibert’s decision to join on behalf of the City of Malibu.
