The California Wildlife Center (CWC) is doing their part to save stranded sea lions and elephant seals that wash ashore along the beaches in Malibu and all over Southern California.
CWC receives an unprecedented amount of calls daily from locals and visitors that find these starving marine mammals wasting away.
I had an opportunity to watch the release of two elephant seals at Nicholas Beach, as well as visit the CWC. At the time of release, an underfeed sea lion was lying in the sand struggling. It appeared that he was inspired once seeing the elephant seals make it to the water. It was remarkable to see them all play for awhile.
This year the amount of marine mammals needing to be rescued far outweighed the space CWC has to offer.
The work CWC does is remarkable; the staff and volunteers are true heroes, doing their part daily to save as many animals as possible with what few resources they have.
