The Malibu United Soccer Club earned its fourth consecutive league title after going 9-1 in the Santa Monica Summer Soccer League.
The team’s only loss came during the season opener when it fell 6-4 to cross-town foes Angel City Football Club. The local team went on to defeat the next nine opponents, including a 16-2 victory over McDermott Football Club.
Among the highlights of the summer season was the introduction of youth team members and Malibu High alums Cully Smoller, J.J. Saul and Munny Manak. The trio was home for summer vacation and made a smooth transition to the team. All three students are now back at school and playing with their respective teams: Smoller at the University of Colorado, Saul at Santa Barbara City College and Manak at UCLA.
Leading the team with goals for the summer league was striker Gabe Bonetti. He scored in eight out of the team’s 10 games, recording multigoal games in seven of the eight.
