Church Says Mayor Wants Homeless Feeding Stopped, City Denies That

The City of Malibu is denying reports … that it ordered an end to the weekly feeding of homeless people at Malibu Methodist Church … in Zuma Beach.

Uproar erupted yesterday … when the volunteers at the church said the city had asked them to stop the Wednesday night soup line.

City officials called in all of the various homeless outreach organizations for a summit meeting on Monday.

It was closed to the public … so all we have is second hand reports.

The church volunteers say the local sheriff’s office blamed churches for attracting homeless people into Malibu.

The recent breakin of a house at Trancas … with a woman sleeping awakened by a naked homeless man … was mentioned.

Kay Gabbard is a volunteer at Malibu Methodist … and she says the sheriff’s office is frustrated.

NEWSCART 77372 GABBARD 111 QQQQ his hands are tied.

“The sheriff is very frustrated with his inability, as he sees it, to really act react in a way that makes the neighbors, the neighborhood, the people of Malibu happy.

“He feels his hands are tied.”

The request was to come up with something to eliminate the fears and concerns …. of the vocal complaints.

And Gabbaed says the mayor had a request.

NEWSCART 77373 GABBARD 222  QQQ: those people can find food other places.

“Skylar Peak’s suggestion was `then I think you need to shut down at Thanksgiving time and open up again in April, and see if there is any changes in the amount of crime.

“And in the meantime … people can find food in other places’.”

The city … however …. has a different recollection of the meeting.

Mayor Skylar Peak and councilman Rick Mullen let the city manager speak for them.

And Reva Feldman tells KBUU News that no request for the church to end its Wednesday night free dinners was made.

Feldman says the idea was to bring all of the homeless outreach people in Malibu together …to coordinate plans to help homeless people …. not to reduce services.

And she specifically says no request was made by the city … for Malibu Methodist to end its free food nights.

And the city put out a press release:

Quote:

“No decisions were made at the meeting.

“All parties agreed to gather more information and come back to continue the constructive dialogue after the Thanksgiving holiday.”

Close quote.

The whole matter has created an uproar … with social media outcries and TV cameras rolling in from Los Angeles.

The matter is on the agenda for next Monday night.

Closed Door Session Starts on Malibu School Autonomy

Also behind closed doors … talks began yesterday between two city council members … and school district officials from Santa Monica.

Superintendent Ben Drati was scheduled to present his concept … of limited autonomy for the Malibu “tail” of the Santa Monica “dog”… so to speak.

Budgets and policy would be set in Santa Monica … day to day perations managed by an assistant superintendent in Malibu.

No details have been revealed.

CPUC Approves Calif Fire Maps, 10 Years After Malibu Fire

Yesterday was one month to the day after three billlion dollars worth of wineries … homes and other property was lost to wind-driven wildfires that erupted across Wine Country … north of San Francisco.,

California regulators on Wednesday proposed a new set of tougher safety rules for power lines, phone lines and utility poles in parts of the state prone to destructive blazes.

Malibu included.

These proposed rules by the California Public Utilities Commission were first discussed after Malibu burned … along with San Diego County … in a series of devastating wildfires in 2007.

Under the proposed new rules … utility companies will have to fix many safety problems in areas of high fire risk … like Malibu … before making repairs in lower-risk zones.

An fire risk map took five years to draw … after the PUC rejected pleas from Malibu to just use existing maps that are almost identical.

The power companies wanted the very best meteorological data to show wind prone areas … when residents said … just use the maps that show where fires break out all the time.

The power companies basically control the P U C … in that regard.

The new maps … incidentally … do -not- show the Napa and Santa Rosa areas as being in the highest risk rating — extreme.

The Malibu and San Diego wildfires in October of 2007 were caused by overloaded power poles falling in heavy winds,

Although the commission imposed some tougher regulations in Southern California within two years of the fires … it took 10 years to draft stronger regulations for fire-prone areas across the state.

Critics say California needs tougher fire-safety regulations for its utilities . just look at the 43 dead people in the Santa Rosa firestorms.

The commission’s five voting members could vote on the new rules and maps as early as Dec. 14.

CPUC Also Approves Plan To Shut Down Diablo Nukes

And … most people may not know it … but we sit 150 miles downwind from the last operating nuclear power plant in California.

The Diablo Canyon twin nuclear reactors are near San Luis Obispo …. up the coast.

A maze of earthquake faults surround the pant … all of them discovered after the nukes started up in 1985.

Yesterday … the state Public Utilities Commission … the P U C … approved a plan to shut down Diablo Canyon.

It’s the same P U C that regulates power poles … and Diablo Canyon is run by the same P G and E that caused the Wine Country firestorm.

P G and E had decided California’s changing energy market means Diablo Canyon is no longer economically feasible.

But its plan to charge ratepayers a third of a billion dollars to wind down operations … was trimmed in half yesterday by te  PUC .
