Mr. York, albeit unintentionally, highlights a key issue with respect to this silly kerfuffle over the second amendment and personal safety. At his age, he should know better and clearly does… sort of. He understands that back in the day, youngsters were freer to explore their world and to find its limits as well as their own. Flash forward, he seems to think that the changing factor which separates today from the old days is the presence of guns.Â
Nonsense!Â
There have always been guns—most assuredly in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Wise parents educate, train and supervise their children. Life is not safe but it can be managed. Weapons are lifesavers. Were that not true, the law enforcement and military wouldn’t bother with it. Private citizens could simply rely on the milk of human kindness possessed by the felons intent on rape, robbery, murder and mayhem—clearly that is not a viable option.Â
I suggest that York and his son do their children and grandchildren a disservice by not training these kids to meet challenges and master their own destinies. While at it, they might also provide the kids a civics lesson in which they may learn to love the Constitution, its principles and the Republic (not democracy) that was bequeathed them by giants. The parents, grandparents and their kids should strive to be worthy.
